| When I was in San Francisco in 1980 the Southern Pacific exploited a commuter line from San Francisco to San Jose. This was the only passenger train service in San Francisco. The national railroad company Amtrak served San Jose and Oakland, on the other site of the San Francisco Bay. The Railway station in San Francisco was a couple of miles out of the city centre. Across the road was our RV Park (Campsite for Campers!!!). Connection to the city enter was given by Trolleybus 30. (This was the first and the last time I stood on a campsite with a Railway station as a neighbour). The SP used single level and gallery coaches on the line to San Jose. Especially the single level coaches looked quite old.
When I visited San Francisco for the second time in 2000 the line was taken over by Caltrain. Trolleybus 30 (and 45) were still in service. An new alternative connection to the city centre was given by Streetcar N. The campsite however was closed. |
